Most commonly treated conditions:
Arthritis
It is a very common diagnosis affecting millions of Americans. It is an inflammatory process that wears down the cartilage lining joint surfaces.
Osteoporosis
This condition is responsible for more than 1.5 million fractures each year. Osteoporosis is defined as decreased bone mass density characterized by thinning and weakening of normal bone. Weight-bearing activities and resistance exercises are two effective ways to help reduce the progression of osteoporosis.
Acute/Chronic Back and Neck Pain
Treatment is available for many spinal disorders including herniated/bulging discs, degenerative disc and joint disease, spinal stenosis, spinal instability, sciatica, referred pain and cervicogenic headaches. Methods of treatment include joint mobilization, postural re-education, traction, soft tissue mobilization and stabilization exercises.
Fibromyalgia
This is a common type of rheumatic disease were the pain is sporadic. The two main symptoms are pain and fatigue. Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain syndrome which causes pain in ligaments, tendons, and muscles.
TMJ Dysfunction
Temporomandibular joint syndrome involves pain in and around the jaw. With TMJ, patient’s often have clicking, subluxation, recurrent dislocation, muscular tenderness with opening and closing of the mouth.
Muscle Strain/Sprain
A strain is a muscle or tendon injury resulting from overexertion or excessive stretching, commonly found in hamstrings, hip flexors, quadriceps, and shoulders.
A sprain is an injury to a ligament as it crosses a joint, usually in the knees, ankles, fingers, toes, and cervical or lumbar spine. Ligaments, tendons, and blood vessels are sometimes torn when a joint is sprained.
Pre/Post-Operative Rehabilitation
We will work closely with your physician to ensure maximal return to your functional activities following surgery. Our physical therapists will focus on restoring normal range of motion, stretching exercises, strengthening supporting muscles, and scar management to return to normal daily activities.
Pre- and Post-Natal
Pregnancy is an exciting time in a woman’s life, but with it comes a lot of changes in her body. With these changes, there is an increase in hormones that result in the relaxation of ligamentous structures. Sometimes, this can lead to painful shifts in alignment which a physical therapist can identify and correct.
Cerebrovascular Accident
This condition is commonly referred to as a stroke. This results from restricted
blood supply to the brain, which causes cell damage and impaired neurologic
function. The most common physical deficits are weakness, lack of coordination
and an abnormal gait.
Treatments that are offered:
Manual Therapy
A clinical approach utilizing skilled, specific hands-on techniques to diagnose and treat soft tissue/joint structures for the purpose of decreasing pain, increasing range of motion, reducing or eliminating soft tissue inflammation, facilitating movement, promoting relaxation, improving stability, and restoring function.
ASTYM/SASTM
The ASTYM/SASTM System is a form of augmented soft tissue mobilization that allows the clinician to stimulate the body’s own capacity for healing in patients with soft tissue degeneration, fibrosis, or chronic inflammation. This leading-edge, non-invasive treatment is performed with ergonomically designed instruments that initiate the healing process necessary for tissue remodeling.
Electrical Stimulation
E-stim is one of the oldest and most effective modalities used in physical therapy.
It is the application of varying electrical currents to muscle tissue for the effects
of relieving pain and reducing muscle tension and improving circulation.
Neuromuscular Re-education
It is a systematic process of movement and strengthening patterns that help nerves, muscles and joints communicate effectively with each other. Neuromuscular Re-education can help patients improve their strength and coordination and return to a more natural functional level of mobility required for daily living and functional activities.
Stretching/Strengthening Exercises
Strengthening and conditioning are two important components to promoting and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Physical therapists design programs for our patients to help achieve their treatment goals and maintain their independence with a home exercise program.
Traction
This is the application of either manual or mechanical force to the body in a way that separates the joint surfaces and elongates the surrounding soft tissues.
Gait Training/Balance Training
There are multiple reasons why one may have difficulty walking. It can be the result of muscle changes, joint pain, surgery, or loss of balance or coordination. Your physical therapist will design a regime of precautions and exercises to help improve your stability in walking.
Prosthetic Training
We offer rehabilitation for the patient with lower extremity amputations from stump care and wrapping to gait training, strengthening, and balance activities.
Vestibular Rehabilitation
Vestibular Rehabilitation therapy (VRT) is an exercise-based program designed to promote central nervous system compensation for inner ear deficits. VRT can help with a variety of vestibular problems, including benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and unilateral and bilateral vestibular hypofunction associated with Menieres disease, labryinthitis, and vestibular neuritis.
Other special programs offered:
Custom-fitted Orthotics
Orthotics are customized inserts that are worn inside the shoe and used to improve the mechanical structure and/or function of the feet. They allow the muscles, tendons and bones of the feet and lower legs to function at their highest potential. When appropriately prescribed, orthotics can decrease pain, not only in the foot, but in other parts of the body such as the knee, hip and lower back to improve daily activities.
Functional Capacity Evaluations
We offer evaluations to determine a client’s present level of health and physical
ability. The Functional Capacity Evaluation involves four phases which include
history, physical assessment, functional activities, and lifting and fitness assessments.
This assessment is largely used to determine one’s ability to increase physical
activity usually in the workplace.
Ergonomic Assessments
An evaluation of one’s workplace may be performed to help identify any problems which would cause abnormal mechanical stress to the musculoskeletal system.
Shoulder Prehab
A pre-surgical educational class for patients awaiting shoulder surgery. Our class is designed to help patients achieve maximal post-surgical success by helping them understand the basics of joint protection and postioning, sleeping posture, modalities, and exercise during their acute and sub-acute post-operative time.
In-Home Physical Therapy Services
This service is a great advantage for patients during their first few weeks of post-operative rehab, providing a smooth transition to out-patient therapy without loss of continuity. Patients who are home-bound or those who have difficulty getting transportation to one of our four clinics would also greatly benefit from this service.
